A New Orb for the Kiddo

Almost 2 years ago, I designed a really fun lamp for O's room. I used a light kit for a globe light under a fan (although I could have probably used any number of light kits from Ikea) as the base then cut a hole in one of those wacky rubbery balls with all the tentacles on it and stretched it over the globe. I used a LED light so it wouldn't put off any heat and voila! I had the wacky orb light that serves as a nightlight and an art piece.

Original Orb

Here's the sad part though . . . over time, the orb ripped. I was content to turn the holes to the back but sometimes when it rotated at night, sweet O would wake up and be frightened by "the monster faces" on the light. Uh oh! So today, finally, I took down the orb and used some materials on hand to change it. I'll admit, many people probably don't have hundreds of silly string lids on hand but this project could be done with lots of different materials.

First I took down the light and peeled off the old ripped ball leaving me with this:

Light 1

I busted out my bag of green lids, the hot glue gun, some extra sticks and got ready to create.

Light 2

I glued the first one on at the very center of the globe then started glueing each one down around that until they were all stuck. The hot glue worked great.

Light 3 Light 4

Once I had covered all the surface I could easily get to, I flipped it over and carefully balanced it on that first cap I placed and added the rest of the lids.

Light 5 Light 6

Finally, I took it back in and hung it back up in his room.

Light 7

Then I hit the lights . . . ooooh, ahhhhhh.

Yeah, I know, it's weird. But it's Orb2 and it's here to stay.

Speaking of weird. We tested out some new uses for the the ball that I peeled off Orb1.

Yes, that's a self portrait taken with my phone and yes, I was still in my jammies. It's PJ Monday don'tcha know?

BTW, does this ball make his butt look big?

I may be biased but I think he looks good in anything, even ball pants.

And finally, it's Baby and O lookin' good.
