Craft room overhaul

When we moved into our house almost 2 years ago, my husband and I discussed it and decided the extra bedroom would be my craft room and a guest room. I set up the crafting/computer space and we added a twin sized bed and called it complete. Fast forward 2 years and all I can remember of that bed is that it collected crap the entire time . . . well, except the one time my mom came to stay with us and she slept there for a few days. That's it and I realized it wasn't worth the space to have a bed stuffed in this tiny little room. We did some rearranging, moved the mattress into O's room (bottom bunk area), demolished the custom storage bed frame I had built and I put up a bookshelf we had waiting in the garage for just such an occasion (the product of a buy one get one free sale awhile back when I wanted a new bookcase for the living room and knew one day this room would change). Now my space is MUCH more functional and I haven't provided myself with any areas that can just collect stuff.

As you look into the room, here's what you see:

The beanbag chair was from O's room. I'm hoping that maybe he can now come in here and do puzzles or read or play with his cars while I craft. I think he's finally getting to that age where he can actually play alone but I like having him close by so maybe we can both play in here.

This is the work area. Nothing much changed here except that those shelves used to hold what's now on the bookshelf and the boxes that are up there were once just sitting on the floor. I'm glad to have them up off the floor.

  1. Found you from tater tots and jello. Just wanted to say - I LOVE the red. Doesn't it make you happy whenever you walk in? Great job!

  2. Thanks Projectanthologies! I do love it and I really love that it all sorta fell together. My craft space used to be more butternut and purple but I moved towards red when we moved into our house and I love it.

  5. I know you posted this awhile ago but hope you can answer a question - is the desk surface resting on the Ikea Hemler (I think) units? What are you using for the surface?
    thank you!!

  6. Hi there - thank you for stopping by. Yes, I have one long shelf resting straight on the Helmer units that I did NOT attach the wheels to. I don't know if the wheels could take the added weight. Each unit has those floor protector foam pads on the bottom though. I purchased the shelving at Home Depot and I had it cut to width there (see link below). I then added several pieces of scrap 2x4 (probably around 10 inches long) running front to back then stacked another shelf on top of those. That's how I created the gap between my two counters. I love how handy it is to have lots of my tools, patterns and projects in between the layers. I even got some special baskets that are just a few inches deep but intended to hold paper so they are a great size.

Here's a link to what I think I purchased. I had them cut it in half at the store so I had two 24(ish) inch deep counters which I stacked with scrap 2x4s in between: http://www.homedepot.com/p/3-4-x-49-x-97-S11-White-Thermally-fused-Melamine-461877/100070209#.UlIyRRagRUQ

It's funny you should find this after it being posted so long ago. This room got turned into our second son's nursery so I got ejected out to the garage in a crummy little nonfunctional space. My husband and I decided we both needed more space now that the "baby" is almost 2 and we're all feeling a little packed into our house. I just came in from the garage where I've been busy packing everything up so we can partition it out and build out real rooms in there. I was feeling totally overwhelmed and kept wondering if the effort would be worth it. Looking back to my first craft room in this house makes me want a functional space once again. Thanks for leading me back to the memories and lighting a little fire under my butt to get this project moving.

Let me know if you have any further questions. This setup was really great. The super deep counter top space left me a lot of room to work with large pieces of fabric or even push the machines back and work in front of them when I was doing non-sewing projects.
