I don't know if the wheels could take the added weight. Each unit has those floor protector foam pads on the bottom though. I purchased the shelving at Home Depot and I had it cut to width there (see link below). I then added several pieces of scrap 2x4 (probably around 10 inches long) running front to back then stacked another shelf on top of those. That's how I created the gap between my two counters. I love how handy it is to have lots of my tools, patterns and projects in between the layers. I even got some special baskets that are just a few inches deep but intended to hold paper so they are a great size.

Here's a link to what I think I purchased. I had them cut it in half at the store so I had two 24(ish) inch deep counters which I stacked with scrap 2x4s in between: http://www.homedepot.com/p/3-4-x-49-x-97-S11-White-Thermally-fused-Melamine-461877/100070209#.UlIyRRagRUQ

It's funny you should find this after it being posted so long ago. This room got turned into our second son's nursery so I got ejected out to the garage in a crummy little nonfunctional space. My husband and I decided we both needed more space now that the "baby" is almost 2 and we're all feeling a little packed into our house. I just came in from the garage where I've been busy packing everything up so we can partition it out and build out real rooms in there. I was feeling totally overwhelmed and kept wondering if the effort would be worth it. Looking back to my first craft room in this house makes me want a functional space once again. Thanks for leading me back to the memories and lighting a little fire under my butt to get this project moving.

Let me know if you have any further questions. This setup was really great. The super deep counter top space left me a lot of room to work with large pieces of fabric or even push the machines back and work in front of them when I was doing non-sewing projects.buildsewreapnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6477432229440135125.post-4444275817042074682013-10-06T20:23:26.982-07:002013-10-06T20:23:26.982-07:00I know you posted this awhile ago but hope you can...I know you posted this awhile ago but hope you can answer a question - is the desk surface resting on the Ikea Hemler (I think) units?
